More PT rehab work ideas for Tripawds!

I am on FitPaws Facebook page and they showed a photo of a dog on top of two of their “donuts” doing rehab work for a spinal issue and talking about how much the dog had improved. I’m not terribly fond of those donuts as they literally have a hole in the center and with our 3 leggers, I really can’t see those PT tools being very safe for them to work on(although they have suggested putting a towel down in the holes). So I thought, hmm, I work Maggie on one BOSU balance dome now, maybe if I get another one, she can work both her front and rear end at the same time…getting even more of a workout. I posted this video on FitPaws facebook page and they responded to me saying that this is a great workout idea for Maggie! This was only her second session on them and she did great! What I like about using these is I don’t really have to manipulate or hang onto Maggie…she does all the work 🙂 I do help her position her rear foot at times though but since this session, she’s gotten way better about positioning herself! This will be quite the workout for her as I could see her rear leg quiver just a bit in one session, so I quit on that note, knowing she was muscle fatiguing. Highly recommend this for other Tripawds! Front or rear leggers! 🙂

As she gets stronger, I may have her do two Fitpaws Balance DISCS – I have one now that I work her on but it is REALLY hard for her to balance on…not sure doing two at one time with her whole body, she’d be able to handle..we’ll see.

UPDATE: 11-19-11 here’s a video of Maggie working on the domes – she’s gotten even stronger since I originally posted 1st video above:

Maggie was diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma on her left knee. She had amputation done on October 20, 2009. Four days after surgery she had a low grade fever and was off her food for two weeks! Trying times.. I am grateful and so pleased with how she is progressing now.

  1. Awesome stuff! Now, are those the regular BOSU domes or the BOSU Pro? Just trying to get an idea of size…I’m thinking Katy might be getting one of these for Christmas 🙂 Since she’s not a real active kid, I want to start her off easy, do you think the BOSU is easier than the balance disc?

  2. Awesome as always Maggie!!!

On the same page with you on the donuts. I don’t want to risk one of the three falling in there. Wouldn’t be good.

Do you have the 55cm Bosu? If not, what size? I could probably do with some Bosu training myself, LOL!

Keep on rocking those workouts girl!

  3. Hey Nancy!
Thanks! I have one 55 cm and my newer one is 45 cm. I only got the 45 cm as I was trying to save a buck($8 to be exact!) and saw it advertised with a human with two feet on it so figured Maggie’s one rear foot on it would be fine 🙂 That said, though, I think there is more of a workout on the 55 cm. – it “gives” more.
Katydid asked me yesterday about balance disc vs. dome and I had to answer her privately as for some reason my posts weren’t going to the blog but the disc is MUCH harder…I’d do domes first and MAYBE at some point, Maggie could do two discs at one time (she has one now) but I am doubting she could handle it. Maybe other, younger dogs could, don’t know. But with the domes at least you have the OPTION of flipping them over to flat said up and that would be one heck of a workout…similar to the discs, if the dog can tolerate the movement on it.

And yeah! I could use the BOSU workouts myself too!!!

  4. Seeing you do the “butt lift” on maggie made me crack up!! I do that all the time with Chloe when she has is contemplating getting on the couch, but she is too tired from playing/having fun all day.

You are gonna have some smokin abs maggie!!!
